São Tomé and Príncipe, officially Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, is a country located in the Gulf of Guinea, over Equator Line, in centre of the world Latitude and Longitude zero, consisting of two main islands (Island of São Tomé and Island of Príncipe) and several islets, totaling 1001 km². The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe were uninhabited until 1470, when Portuguese navigators discovered them. It was then a colony of Portugal from the 15th century until its independence on July 12, 1975.

With approximately of 215,000 inhabitants, the capital is São Tomé.

The official language is Portuguese and the currency is Dobra.

The country is relatively close to the coasts of Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Nigeria.

The main economic activity is agriculture, fishing and tourism, in addition, the discovery of oil in its waters could be an important source of revenue and energy in the future.
