We know what’s important to you when it comes to your refrigerated cargo. Whether it be perishable, pharmaceutical or any other high-value and sensitive cargo, our reefer experts ensure that your cargo is kept in its optimal condition, no matter when and where. Our modern and reliable equipment will provide you with the most precise temperature control.
Today, consumers across the world expect to have the freshest produce and goods throughout the whole year. This, of course, would be impossible without reefer containers taking your cargo across the globe.
Hapag-Lloyd has continuously invested in reefer equipment over the past years, ensuring that we are one of the largest and most modern Reefer carriers in the market.
Our reefers can maintain constant temperatures between -35°C / -31°F and +30°C / +86°F. Even with extreme high or low outside temperatures, the refrigerated container technology allows you to keep your cargo fresh and deliver the best quality to the destination.

Reefer cargo isn’t just any commodity stuffed into a container. If you’re using a reefer, it means that your goods are probably perishable, extremely sensitive, or possibly have a higher value than most other commodities. That’s why we stress the importance of special cargo handling for reefers.
To ensure the best possible cargo care, we ask you to observe the following guidelines: Reefer Cargo Handling
Temperature sensitive commodities are required to be shipped at a certain temperature for quality and safety reasons. Some substances are so sensitive to temperature changes that they have to be carried under constant temperature control and at times also government regulations make it mandatory during summer months.
At Hapag-Lloyd we want to ensure safety for everyone in the supply chain and take care of your cargo because
Safety is a Choice.
Shipping pharmaceutical products requires care and commitment towards the producers but also the end consumers.
To guarantee a constantly high quality and transport your cargo in safety, Hapag-Lloyd obtained a worldwide QEM certification in 1994, in accordance with the stringent requirements of the international quality standards.
Hapag-Lloyd is certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Moreover, Hapag-Lloyd adheres to principles of Good Distribution Practice.
For a controlled atmosphere we provide a wide range of technologies such as ExtraFresh and ExtraFresh Plus. With the sophisticated technology the atmosphere inside of the container is controlled to delay respiration and to extend the shelf life for fruits and vegetables. At Hapag-Lloyd, we have the best solution ready for nearly each and every perishable commodity.

Cold Treatment is a temperature-treatment process for perishable fruits aiming at protecting the import countries’ agriculture from unwanted insects and larvae.
At Hapag-Lloyd, we take the responsibility to adhere to quarantine requirements seriously. The fruit pulp is cooled for a predetermined time and temperature based on the requirements of each import country’s phytosanitary authorities. Insects and larvae are effectively eliminated during transit and no time is required for land-based treatments.
Our advanced reefer equipment, outfitted with temperature probes, accurately measures and records the temperature of fruit pulp. Temperatures are adjusted automatically back to optimal after the treatment has been completed.
We at Hapag-Lloyd want to ensure that we do everything we can to make shipping more sustainable. Therefore, optimizing the flows of our reefer equipment fleet by focusing on Non-Operated Reefer (NOR) transports is key to ensure that no equipment move is wasted.
Together with our customers we want to explore the opportunities to load dry cargo into Non-Operated Reefer to those parts of the world where the reefer equipment is needed.
Support us to make shipping more sustainable and reach out to your sales contact to find if we can do NOR transports together.
Suitable NOR commodities are dry cargos packed in cartons, boxes, palletized cargos and cars
For ethical reasons, Hapag-Lloyd does not transport any species that are seriously endangered and on the so-called “red list of threatened species”, e.g. whales, dolphins, sharks etc.
