Mark Frese, born on 27 April 1964, is married and has four children.
Frese holds a degree in economics and studied at Witten/Herdecke University as well as McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
He started his career in 1993 as an analyst at Finck & Co, a private bank in Düsseldorf. In 1994, he switched to Kaufhof Holding AG, where he held several management positions in finance and corporate strategy before becoming head of the Controlling & Projects unit in 2004. In 2009, Frese became head of the Planning & Controlling unit of Metro AG. He became the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Metro Cash & Carry in 2010, and was appointed CFO of the entire Metro Group in January 2012. After the company was split into two in 2017, Frese worked as the CFO of Metro’s successor company, Ceconomy AG, which operates the Media Markt and Saturn chains, the consumer-electronics and digital division of the Metro Group.
Mark Frese was appointed to the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG effective 25 November 2019 and became Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on 1 March 2020. From 1 May 2022 he was additionally appointed Chief Procurement Officer (CPO).
